Holding the small handle between finger and thumb, place the end of the Steel-of-Fire into or next to the inflammable material. Use the rear side of the special attached blade, or the back edge of a knife, and slowly, whilst applying downwards pressure, slide it over the steel to produce hot sparks. Aim the sparks down into the inflammable material. Once the fire has become established, build it up slowly by gradually adding thin pieces of material, building up to thicker ones until your fire reaches the desired size.
